Anne Sexton
“One of my secret instructions to myself as a poet is: “Whatever you do, don’t be boring.”
Many people would like to express their thoughts and feelings through the writing of poetry but they simply do not know where to begin.
The aim of this group is to encourage people to make the first steps in writing poetry. In the case of more experienced writers, it will be to help them to develop their poetry further. In either case, one of the best ways to improve your writing is to gain the confidence to read aloud your words in a friendly, listening environment. After all, everyone's experience is unique and everyone's voice is unique. Writing poetry can be a helpful way in which to discover your own voice. Another way to gain confidence in poetry writing is to have the opportunity to discuss it with like-minded people.
Writing in traditional forms such as the sonnet may appear restricting, but some people can find it helpful to have those guidelines which poets have used for centuries. However, writing in free verse will also be encouraged for those who prefer to do so. At each meeting, photocopies of poems will be given to members of the group to help them with their own writing.
Each monthly meeting will be two hours long with a break in the middle for tea or coffee. During the meeting, members will be encouraged to make at least a start on a poem which they can then add to at home. All you need to bring along is pen and paper. The meetings will take place at the Group Leader`s house in Beachamwell.
